RRB Technician 2026: Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about RRB Technician 2026 exam pattern, syllabus, salary, paper structure and Grade 1 vs Grade 3 comparison.
1 How many papers are there in the RRB Technician exam?
The RRB Technician exam has only one paper — the Computer Based Test (CBT). There is no second stage CBT. After the CBT, candidates go through Document Verification and Medical Examination. The CBT is the same for both Grade 1 Signal and Grade 3, but the difficulty level and technical subject questions differ based on the post.
2 What is the syllabus for RRB Technician Grade 3?
The Grade 3 syllabus has four sections: Mathematics (25 questions), General Intelligence and Reasoning (25 questions), General Science (40 questions) and General Awareness (10 questions). Total 100 marks in 90 minutes. Each wrong answer carries a 1/3rd negative mark. The General Science section has the highest weightage.
3 What is the in-hand salary of an RRB Technician?
The in-hand salary depends on the posting city and applicable deductions. For Technician Grade 3 (Level 2), the in-hand salary usually ranges between ₹25,000 and ₹30,000 per month. For Technician Grade 1 Signal (Level 5), it usually ranges between ₹35,000 and ₹42,000 per month. The final amount includes DA, HRA and TA.
4 Which is better — RRB Technician Grade 1 or Grade 3?
Grade 1 Signal is better in terms of pay (Level 5 vs Level 2), promotion scope and job responsibility. However, Grade 1 requires a Diploma or Degree in Engineering, while Grade 3 only requires ITI. If you have a Diploma or Degree, Grade 1 is the better option. If you only have ITI, Grade 3 is your eligible choice. Both are permanent railway jobs with pension benefits.
5 What kind of work does an RRB Technician do daily?
The daily work includes inspection, repair and maintenance of railway equipment. Grade 1 Signal Technicians work on signalling systems, relay rooms and track circuits. Grade 3 Technicians assist in repair of electrical fittings, workshop machinery, diesel sheds and rolling stock. The job involves both indoor and outdoor field work in shifts.
6 Is ITI compulsory to apply for RRB Technician?
ITI is compulsory only for Technician Grade 3. The minimum qualification for Grade 3 is 10th pass plus ITI in a relevant trade, or an Act Apprenticeship. For Technician Grade 1 Signal, ITI is not required — instead a Diploma or Degree in Engineering or B.Sc in relevant subjects is mandatory.
7 How many exam attempts are allowed in RRB Technician?
There is no limit on the number of attempts. Candidates can apply as many times as they want, as long as they are within the prescribed age limit. For Technician Grade 3, the age limit is 18 to 30 years. For Technician Grade 1 Signal, the age limit is 18 to 33 years. Age relaxation is available for reserved categories as per government rules.
8 Is the RRB Technician exam tough to crack?
The difficulty level is moderate. With a single CBT of 100 marks, the exam mainly tests basics of Maths, Reasoning and General Science. The technical section is based on the trade you studied. Candidates who prepare with previous year papers and focus on speed with accuracy usually clear the cut-off in the first attempt.
